Blackjack Variations: Pontoon Blackjack

Online Pontoon Blackjack
Every card game has its own unique history, sometimes colorful, sometimes a bit murky. Blackjack's roots are relatively easy to trace, if you don't go too far back or throw in too much guesswork.
|
Most historians agree that the game of blackjack was born in France, where it
(or a similar version) was called vingt-et-un. After that, the British adopted
and adapted the game and called it pontoon. The basics of pontoon are very
similar to conventional blackjack where players try to get closest to 21,
without going over.

Pontoon, or British-Style Blackjack
Pontoon blackjack is played with eight 52-card decks. Cards have the same value
as in regular blackjack. In pontoon, you win a 2-to-1 payout for either a
"pontoon" or a "5-card trick." A "pontoon" is defined as an ace and any 10-point card. In other words, a pontoon is another name for a blackjack (or a natural). A "5-Card trick" - another pontoon specialty - is a hand with five cards that has not busted. All 5-Card tricks have the same value - the specific point total does not matter. A pontoon beats a 5-card trick. There is no dealer up-card in pontoon, and the dealer wins on ties.
The dealer will deal each player two cards face-up, and two cards face-down to
himself. He can peek at his cards for pontoon. If the dealer has a pontoon he
will immediately turn it over and collect all bets and cards.
The scoring in pontoon blackjack is almost identical to the traditional, regular game of blackjack. All numbered cards are worth their face value in points. All face cards (Jacks, Queens, and Kings) are worth 10 points each. The ace is worth either 1 point or 11 points - it's up to the player holding it.

Pontoon has its own special vocabulary. To "twist" is to take another card (known in regular blackjack as to "hit"). To "stick" is to decline another card (the same as to "stand" in blackjack). The pontoon player is required to twist on any hand less than 15 (unless he has five cards). The player may twist at any point, including after doubling. The player can double but only once per hand. The player can split two cards of equal rank (including non-identical 10 cards, like a Queen and a King). The player may re-split once, up to a total of three hands, including aces. The two-card 21 after splitting aces counts as a pontoon. (This is different from regular blackjack, where a two-card 21 after a split does not count as a blackjack.)
If the player busts he immediately loses and forfeits his cards and total bet. After all the players have played out their hands the dealer turns his two cards face up. The dealer has to twist on all 17s. When the dealer's cards and remaining players' cards are compared, a player's pontoon or 5-card trick pays 2:1, other winning hands pay even money, and ties lose.
